JUAN IGNACIO GERARDI

BIOCONEXION & MITRE FORTIN | Jujuy

Trained in political science, after travelling on foot through Latin America, destiny led him to Yala, in Jujuy. There, in 2010, he founded Bioconexión, an organisation dedicated to amplifying the role of small producers and revaluing the links with the nature that surrounds us. His work brought prosperity and confidence to local communities, and introduced herbs, flours, potatoes, corn and wild weeds into Argentinean gastronomy as part of a "new" national culinary heritage.
In 2017, Bioconexion was chosen as one of 17 business innovations awarded by the AIM2 Flourish platform for its contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals.
Gerardi is also part of the Argentine headquarters of Seed Guardians, a global network that seeks to democratise access to native seeds. Its mission is to promote crop integrity in order to generate the necessary actions to mitigate climate change. At the same time, he works together with Tato Giovannoni in the Research and Product Research Department of Mitre Fortin.
From his perspective, his role is to invite us to look at food producers in a different way. For him, there is no food without people, there is no better world without valuing the work, the feelings and the knowledge of those responsible for each crop.
